Postcards to — from Home

A country can be defined by its turbulent history: Taiwan has dealt with 50 years of Japanese colonialism, immediately followed by 37 years of martial law. During those 87 years, architecture became a tool to flaunt modern building technologies and to assert cultural dominance. Consequently, one would assume the violent imposition of strict and ordered hierarchy reflected in the buildings. Yet, while we see hierarchy in the macro, we also find the opposite in the micro. Taiwan’s architecture is shaped as much by its colonial and martial past as it is by the people who navigated—and continue to navigate—its spaces. As the Taiwanese adapted and lived within the imposed materials and architectural elements, a new in-between space was created by eroding the boundaries between public and private, monumental and adhoc, inside and outside.

Inside / Outside Daily Taiwan 




The process to analyze Taiwan’s in-between-ness came through a collection of artifacts. Working in another medium helped develop an intuition of the process by which unfamiliar, imposed materials and architectural elements were made familiar through user adaptation. In the example above, postcard images, with their own logic and narratives, were removed from their context and combined to form new spaces. Each postcard frames a moment with components of materiality, environment, and actions. they allow us to understand place not through monumental buildings or political agendas, but through the everyday.

Boundaries are blurred: of city life, of cultural impositions, of space—citizens do a lot of sharing. If we consider the idea of mix-use and mis-use, sharing is a practiced habit. In Taiwan the gods, saints, and its citizens are all the same—temples share walls with apartments, an unassuming table with 7/11 snacks is placed in front of a business as an offering to the spirits.&#38;nbsp;

To place in context, the old capital, Tainan, is located far south on the island. Wide streets, implemented during colonial rule, are main arteries running through the city, but quickly, they divert to smaller streets, and then alleyways. While seemingly dense from above, the edges of the buildings don't mark an end, rather a series of thresholds where inside and outside fluctuate between one and the other.

With each built project, comes an appropriation and exaggeration of material culture through two forms — the familiar (or the contextual) and the defamiliar (or the souvenir) — using corrugated aluminium sheeting, tiles, and window grills as examples. These dichotomies don’t necessarily need to become adversaries, rather they can be tools to both approach a place as an outsider and carve space out as a local.

The rural to urban migration has begun to radically affect the economic relationships of the Kariakoo marketplace in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. As the city continues to densify, the need to maintain centrality, while simultaneously expanding, has become increasingly present. Kariakoo is an extremely visual urban landscape, where buildings are masked by the products and merchandise they house. In many instances the architecture itself is diffused by the merchandise displayed on it, converting the buildings into a form of advertisement. The design intervention aims to provide a large storage and retail hub that anticipates high levels of interaction as the city continues to grow. Ultimately the structure embraces the visual density and necessity to advertise and be seen.


By prioritizing the need for storage and visibility, the project envisions a city that does not require fully habitable structures to flourish. The intervention in Kariakoo undermines the concept of architecture as rigid process and architecture as something that can remain site-less, especially in the context of post-colonialism.

The increased scale of the diagram analyzes the effective front of the building as a series of volumized gradients and patterns instead of the conventional relationship of the facade. ︎︎︎

In the studio, we examined the architectural notion of “content” and “container”: content was defined by a selection of architectural concepts that were sampled, edited, and combined, while container was defined by the analysis of a specific site. 











Très Grande Bibliothèque, a library submitted to a competition by OMA, was initially conceptualized (not built) as a solid block of information. The solid block consists of a series of “deep beams” and floor plates, so that highly complex programmatic voids can be cut out of the information block. The “walls” that support the structure also house vertical circulation and services. The concentration of structure to these walls allows for extreme flexibility in the floor plan. However, the decisions made regarding circulation seem to be made without any acknowledgment of the surrounding site. The interior is extremely detached from the exterior in order to achieve the “field” condition present in the project.

BAUMAXX hypermarket, designed by Croatian-based firm Njiric+Njiric, was created as an inversion of the American hypermarket. The parking lots are strategically carved out of the plot to prioritize traffic and give a relatively mundane program a bias on the site. It’s also wrapped in an active envelope, which uses certain transparencies, reflectors, and signs to engage the traffic that continuously moves around it. The architectural scheme of the project, which consists of moments of complete transparency and complete opacity, is compromised when individual businesses occupy the glass curtain wall with signage and displays. Ultimately, BAUMAXX was designed as a rigid structure unable to accommodate the growth of the businesses it housed.

The conventional subdivision of the street is redefined in Kariakoo. In some areas the sheer amount of merchandise overflows, hangs, or stacks onto any available surface; creating an ambiguity between street, sidewalk, and building front.

A taxonomy of each wall’s facade was made to understand where transparency and opacity was needed within the scheme. The facade opens to reveal the merchandise of respective stakeholders within the wall, or closes to become advertisement billboards.

The walls can house program, circulation, storage, retail, and signage within 8 feet of space, challenging the idea that a market can only occur within a block of a building. The rotation of each strip opens and closes to either show the merchandise within the wall, or become flat to display advertisement billboards. The “walls” which form the main structural elements are appropriated from the sample and deployed on to the site.

How can we reconcile the many dichotomies at the site of Sewoon Sangga in Seoul, Korea? It’s past histories or possibilities of the future, to dig into the earth or to lift up to new spaces, to render the hidden stories and memories visible; perhaps this project isn’t about a reconciliation of Korean’s histories and citizens, but rather a chance to empathize with all parts. 















Sewoon Sangga can be seen as a land-bound ship in the middle of Seoul. Built in post-war Korea, the one-kilometer long building was a symbol of modernity and nationalism; however, it functioned more as an assertion of the government’s administrative power. The voices of the individual were not heard or reflected within the massive complex. Situated on top of a trench made during the Japanese occupation, this mega-structure is another layer to the pain and wounds of the city disguised as “the new future of Seoul”.

This project attempts to unearth these histories—partially hidden in the earth, the memorial is most visible at the entrance on the other side of the street by the Jongmyo shrine. A burial site for royalty in the Joseon Period, the park is mostly occupied by older gentlemen spending their days. The above-ground structure contrasts with this space by being open and free to gather and see the surrounding city. One element cannot exist without the other.

Hidden in the earth, the metal “tube” of circulation pierces the earth at the entrance. There is no indication of what’s below except when the edges pierce back through the earth at the reflection pool, and then finally at the existing exterior elevator.

Above ground, a relatively open structure for gathering and viewing the surrounding city, the existing ramp is partially removed to open up the site and connect to the added observation deck.

Walls press downwards, imitating burnt earth. Slanted walls are placed around the space to become an exhibition space for untold stories.

Walls open outwards, for that of remembrance. The only room to have natural light, the sun’s shadows reflect a pattern along the walls and pool to feel infinite parts above and below.

In the Production of Space, Henri Lefebrve states, “[Space is] A representation which passes itself off as a concept, when it is merely an image, a mirror, and a mirage, and which, instead of challenging, instead of refusing, merely reflects.” This project is an analysis and critical discovery of the means of representation and production, in regards to aesthetic trends in contemporary architecture. These images, reproduced and re-appropriated, have reached a global audience through social media. 


At the forefront, I acknowledged the constraints of the software provided, partially discovering my own processes through the frustrations and quirks of something seemingly made to be easy. In earlier iterations of animation and rendering, there was a desire to explore the dichotomy of the finished product versus the process—the uncanny versus the “real”. This drive continued throughout the final project.

Embracing the glitches in earlier processes while experimenting with elements
With the goal of taking the sample of an existing building and curating of domestic objects, the end image products were determined from the beginning. The building itself is siteless, only the areas that are viewed in the “images” are articulated in some form.

The understanding that the final product would only exist virtually and be consumed on social media determined the representation. Extreme gestures were taken—slicing and shifting— to light or stylize each of the curated domestic spaces in a particular way. Each domestic space reveals a snapshot of the occupant in the space; through the unpacked groceries on the floor or the iPhone and coffee on the table, as if the occupant were there just moments ago.

In addition to the placement of the domestic objects, the curtain1 is meant to conceal, to assist, and to guide. Within the six images, the curtain doesn’t seem to do much and yet in the reveal of the whole, it becomes an integral part of the system.&#38;nbsp;
The goal of the final outcome was not to end at an aesthetic acceptance of what “looks good” on a social media platform. I wanted to emphasize moments of frustration, labor, and hilarity; realizing that a given software can only do so much to achieve a certain look. Perfection can sometimes come at the expense of time and work.

Site plan within the context of a hilly neighborhood in Zürich 





 A traveler arrives in Zürich for the first time, as their job often gives them the flexibility to both travel and work. This project is meant for those with similar stories—it is a place that provides an immediate and welcoming community, while offering a plethora of workspaces. The building is rooted deeply within the hills, allowing access from almost all sides. The curve of the bottom shell connects directly with the ground on the north side where the complementary upper curved shell offers shelter for workspaces. The space where the two shells intersect opens up for a skylight to provide light and connect to the lower level.


Overall, the atmosphere of the space and architecture is not meant to be chaotic or overdone. This gives the occupants freedom to choose whether to find peace in a new place or to liven the space through their creations or interactions. Having all the resources one needs in the same location, tucked into the hills of Zürich away from the city, creates an environment where one can perform life’s rituals privacy, and be pushed to leave and explore the surrounding area.

Located in Quonset, Rhode Island, this project focused on the design of a +/- 60,000 gross sq ft speculative office building with an emphasis on the circulation system, structure, and its environmental systems. The first floor accommodates commercial spaces, main lobby, cafe, and loading dock. The rest of the “net” space made is devoted to open office layouts for a multi-tenant building. Working with a given building system, we were constrained by its structure: a steel frame with a rain-screen skin enclosure and centralized core. 


We researched zoning codes through IBC, RIBC, and QBPDP. After multiple iterations of massing, we arrived at a 3-story office building with rain screen baguettes heavily used on the south facade for shading with a higher concentration of glazing on the northern facade for natural lighting penetration. &#38;nbsp;

A prefix is not a word until it is attached to one, taking something that exists and changing and charging its meaning. The prefix operates as an analogy for the processes that have defined our methodologies and driven this collection of work. Our studios are defined by the language that drives our critiques, discussions and studio practice. Language creates a set of operations, but what culture is inherently created through these conditioned methodologies? 










Through this exhibition, we hope to reveal how language has fostered a pedagogy of interventions.
